Cleveland mayor and wife in hospital following traffic accident

Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland and his wife Sandra remained in Skyridge Medical Center Monday morning following a traffic accident Saturday evening.

According to city spokeswoman Melinda Carroll, the Rowlands were driving on Georgetown Road during a severe thunderstorm. As they passed an electric power transformer, it was struck by lightning. Ms. Carroll said Mr. Rowland swerved to avoid a ball of fire created by the lightning strike. He swerved and hit another vehicle headed in the opposite direction.

There were no injuries in the second vehicle.

Mr. Rowland was undergoing surgery this morning for a fractured knee and swollen ankle. Mrs. Roland is expected to be released later today.

Ms. Carroll said both are in good spirits.
