East Ridge student, 17, died of heart condition, report says

A Hamilton County medical examiner's report shows that a heart condition likely killed a 17-year-old East Ridge High School student.

Shanecia Gabrielle Kelly likely died of myocarditis, according to the report.

The medical website WebMD describes the condition as an "inflammation of the heart muscle" which afflicts thousands of people in the United States annually.

Kelly collapsed on Aug. 31 during a Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps program at the school.

Viral infection is the most common cause of myocarditis, though some bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections can also cause the condition, according to the website.
