The top-ranked Southern Conference women’s golf team is proving again that it’s worthy of a top-40 ranking in the country.
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga owns a 17-shot lead heading into the final round of the league tournament at Moss Creek Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C.
“I’m happy to be in the lead but a bit a disappointed in the way we’ve played,” coach Colette Murray said. “We haven’t been at our best, and if this were [NCAA] regionals or finals, we’d be in trouble.”
UTC shot a 17-over-par 305 and is 32 over at 608 through two rounds, which is 17 strokes better than the College of Charleston with one round to go. UNC Greensboro, Furman and Western Carolina are third through fifth at 630, 631 and 634.
“I’m not disappointed in our effort,” Murray said, “just in the results.”
Mocs senior Emma de Groot is running away with medalist honors. She shot a 1-under 71 Monday and is at 145 for the tournament. Freshman teammate Jordan Britt is at 152 after a 75, tied for second with Furman’s Alexa Rancourt.
UTC’s other senior, Christine Wolf, is tied for eighth at 155, one shot better than freshman Marion Duvernay in a tie for 11th. Junior Maria Juliana Loza is tied for 16th at 159.
“I’m very pleased with Emma’s play,” Murray said. “She’s the best player in the league and is out to prove it.”
