Virginia boy killed by tree felled by Irene

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Virginia boy has died after a tree felled by winds from Hurricane Irene crashed through his apartment in Newport News.

City spokeswoman Cleder Jones says the 11-year-old boy and his mother were in the apartment when a large tree fell shortly after noon Saturday. Winds from the storm were around 60 mph at the time.

Jones says the boy's mother was able to make it out of the apartment uninjured.

The boy, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jones said several apartments in the Brookridge Apartments complex were damaged.
