Unum chairman Fossel retires

Unum Corp. Chairman Jon S. Fossel, 69, is retiring as nonexecutive chairman of the company's board of directors.

William J. Ryan, a 67-year-old retired chief executive for TD Banknorth Inc., has been named nonexecutive chairman of the board, succeeding Fossel.

The transition will take effect Sept. 30 when Fossel marks five years of service as chairman.

Fossel joined the board in 2002 and has served as chairman since 2006. Ryan, who joined the Unum board in 2004, called Unum "an exceptional organization with a track record of outstanding performance."

Unum is the world's largest disability insurer with annual revenues of more than $10 billion.

New York leads U.S. parking rates

NEW YORK - An annual survey of parking rates across the country found that midtown and downtown Manhattan are the most expensive places in the U.S. to put your car.

The survey from Colliers International released Thursday found that the median monthly rate is $541 in midtown and $533 downtown. That's more than three times the national average of just over $155.

Other cities with expensive monthly parking rates include Boston, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Seattle. On the low end of the scale were places like Reno, Nev., where the median monthly rate is $45, and Phoenix, at $50.
