Boyfriend’s lighter caught woman on fire at gas pump

A 20-year-old woman was critically burned at a gas station after her boyfriend lit a cigarette as she was pumping gas, authorities said.

Samantha Lawrence, 20, sustained second- and third-degree burns to about 30 percent of her body on her torso and arms, according to a released statement by Chattanooga Fire Department. She remains at Joseph M. Still Burn Center in Augusta, Ga.

Investigators have ruled the cause of the fire accidental.

Lawrence was with her boyfriend, Derek Seretean, at the Kangaroo gas station at 1005 Hixson Pike on May 26 when he purchased cigarettes inside and returned to light one next to her, the release said. A flash fire occurred catching her clothes on fire.

A bystander told her to drop to the ground and roll to extinguish the flames, according to the release, and a cashier inside hit the kill switch to the gas pump.

Seretean was arrested at the scene on an unrelated warrant, according to Chattanooga police.

Unbelievable! I'm sorry to say I guessed right about the cause of this fire. I hope she sues him for every cent he has. I can't believe there's not a criminal charge for reckless endangerment in a case like this: "accidental" indeed!

Investigators should have ruled the accident stupidital. I have never heard of anything so moronic. Are young people really that stupid these days?

I can't even count how many times that I've been pumping gas and had to ask some "non believer" to please not light that cigarette while standing by the pump.

I have seen guys holding their cigarette in the hand that was holding the gas nozzle. (unbelievable, right?) Once I saw a guy doing this and the gas fumes flashed... but blew themselves out. I got outta there! No way was I gonna hang around an idiot like that. I am truly sorry for the young woman that was burned...Burns are horrible things that can never be completely healed. It is sad his stupidity will cause her pain and suffering all of her life.

@Libertarians4Freedom So what your saying is because it doesn't happen very often it is ok to do it? I am a bit confused by your comment. Anyone with half a brain was taught at a young age not to mix fire with gasoline. This is just someone being stupid and unfortunately someone else has to suffer for it. Very sad.

Libertarians4Freedom writes: These are rare occurrences, of course, I would never smoke and pump gas at the same time, but plenty of people do and nothing happens.

Is this some Ayn Rand-type thing? I don't "get" the libertarian mindset, I guess, when it comes to self-immolation. It seems to me the very essence of personal liberty is to do what you want and need to do, just as long as it doesn't endanger others or violate the inalienable rights of someone else. Smoking at a gas pump creates such an obvious and preventable risk of fire and serious injury to other people that it violates the basic premise of "live and let live." Can you rethink this one or else explain it to us in more depth, L4F?

By the way, 99% of the time isn't very good if you consider how often people pump gas every day. I know it's just a loose figure of speech as you're using it, but that would be a huge number of people going up in flames constantly. I'm just sayin'...
