Top five states for bankruptcy

Despite a decline in personal bankruptcies in Tennessee and Alabama last year, the two states remained among the top states in per capita bankruptcy filings. Georgia moved up from third to second last year because of an increase in filings. Nationwide, personal bankruptcy filings grew 8 percent to 1.53 million in 2010 to include about one of every 200 people.

  1. Nevada - A bankruptcy filing for every 91 residents in 2010, up 1.1 percent from the prior year
  2. Georgia - A bankruptcy filing for every 126 residents in 2010, up 4.4 percent form the prior year
  3. Tennessee - A bankruptcy filing for every 127 residents in 2010, down 7.7 percent from the prior year
  4. Alabama - A bankruptcy filing for every 139 residents in 2010, down 2.4 percent from the prior year
  5. Indiana - A bankruptcy filing for every 141 residents in 2010, down 2 percent from the prior year.
