Pet owners enable dogs to get hitched

It's not unheard of for a dog to take part in a wedding, maybe as a ring bearer. But lately dogs are the brides and grooms.

Yes, dogs are getting married, and their owners are going all out to make the big day a special event.

The faux nuptials, dubbed "puptials," are becoming increasingly popular, according to petbook.org.

"Known designers like Carol Blanchette of Emma Rose have even left the haute couture bridal industry to specialize in canine weddings," the website noted.

Pamela Anderson sparked the trend when she arranged a "wedding" for her golden retriever and chihuahua in Malibu Beach, petbook.org stated.

Upcountry.com introduced a dog wedding collection last year, said lead designer Donna Bodell. The line was developed based on customers' requests, she said.

"It started a few years back when we filled orders for dogs in wedding parties with our regular ribbon collars to match the specific color scheme of a wedding," Bodell said. "We thought it might be fun to really run wih the idea and developed decorative floral ruffs and collars."

Bodell said the company soon will be introducing collars embroidered with the name of the human bride and groom and/or the dog's name.
