The profile of a typical volunteer may surprise you. She is a working mother. While many believe retirees or college-credit-seeking students form the majority of volunteers, statistics show working mothers in their 30s and 40s make up the biggest group. While retirees clock in the most volunteer hours, a greater portion of working mothers volunteers. A quarter of folks 65 and older volunteer compared with a third of working mothers from 35 to 44 years old, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. "You want to get something done, you ask a busy person to get it done," said Beth Haddock, a United Way executive.
