Chattanooga East 16th Street shooting victim identified as Jose Mendez

The man who was shot on East 16th Street in Chattanooga today has been identified as Jose Mendez, 35.

Mendez told Chattanooga police he was working on a vehicle in his yard when three young black men approached, according to spokeswoman Sgt. Jerri Weary. He said they first asked to borrow a gas can, then shot him in the shoulder and went through his pockets, stealing his money.

The three got into a blue pickup truck and drove away.

Mendez was treated at the hospital for a non-life-threatening wound. Weary said the investigation continues.
