Tennessee's voter ID measures sensible

With Tennessee lawmakers sensibly having approved a bill to head off voter fraud by requiring photo ID at polling places, the state is also taking steps to reduce the possibility that a legitimate voter will be unable to cast a ballot.

Recently, for example, the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security began opening nearly 20 driver service centers across the state one Saturday a month to smooth the path further for voters who need a state-issued photo ID.

The centers will be open the first Saturday of each month through March 2012. People who need photo ID to vote will be able to obtain it for free at the facilities. In addition, the department plans to convert driver's licenses that do not have photos into photo driver's licenses that can be used for voting.

Participating in this effort are two centers in Hamilton County: one on Dayton Boulevard in Red Bank and the other on Bonny Oaks Drive. A center in Bradley County will be open as well.

There are also other safeguards built into the law to protect legitimate voters.

Similar photo ID laws in other states have not been found to disenfranchise voters, and we are confident Tennessee's won't. But it is wise nonetheless to take precautions to protect the rights of valid voters.

Prevention is better than cure. How could anyone object to preventing people from voting twice?

Go to your designated polling place, present your voter registration, they check off your name on the roll(s),you cast your ballot(vote),go back outside, return and vote again.Easy huh? "vote twice"? gimme a break!

All the whining is so sad... Is making sure someone is old enough to buy cigarettes and beer really more important than making sure elections aren't fraudulent?

Go to the designated polling place, present the fraudulent non-photo voter registration card, they check off the name on the roll(s), you cast a ballot (vote). You go to the next designated polling place, present another non-photo fraudulent voter registration card, they check off the name on the roll(s), you cast another ballot (vote, repeat...

It's good to have some safeguards in place. Don't you think?

Last year when I voted I showed my voter registration card to the poll worker, he checked the rolls and allowed me to vote because he trusted me and the system that has been in place for years.

Next year when I go to vote I will show my voter registration card and my photo ID. The poll worker won't know if it is my picture on the ID or "bookieturnersghost" but he will check the rolls and allow me to vote. Not because of the photo ID but because he trusts me and the system that has been in place for years!

All the examples of voter fraud that have been used to justify requiring photo IDs involve misconduct by poll workers.

How will requiring photo IDs in any way stop this kind of voter fraud?

Are there actually people out there that would risk a felony conviction impersonating a registered voter or multiple voting, knowing that doing so, in itself, will not turn the election?

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of dollars of tax payers money we are wasting on all this ID card madness to prevent a problem that probably doesn't exist, or if it does exist is so infinitesimal that it doesn't matter?

Does anyone beside me find it a bit odd that the only states that have passed these laws are red states with Republican controlled state legislatures?

I have a hunch that the REAL "problem" is a fear of Democrats :)

Another brilliant republican idea......and you wander why we have "WALL STREET OCCUPYER".....there have been lesser than 100 voter fraud doing national election.....So the republican creates a crisis.....With the voter ID as many as 5 millions voters will be disenfranchised.....

There's no voter fraud crisis.....This is part of their strategy to retake the white house...they have target segment of the population thats vote heavily democrats,,they have factor in collateral damage of republican voter that will be suppressed and calculated the advantage over weight the disadvantages.

The Rich and Greedy owned the republican party on national level and the state level.....they have funnel millions of dollars into state race...ie...governers and legislator to set state law for voters ID's........

George Bush stole the election from Al Gore......the republican found out how easy it was without any push back....so they up to their old tricks.....they will do any thing to get OBAMA out.....American can see how they rushing voter ID's through rather than gradually phasing in the voter ID law. THey are in a rush because 2012 election is coming next year....

Replublican are the people that claim to love the constitution so much....nothing can be farther from the truth...republican vitual the constitution only when its their rights being violated.

Majority of American see what they are doing....their will be a huge PUSH BACK....they have over played their hands......This is what happen when American allow MONEY to get into the political system and completely take over......this is what happen when you have a political party that only see on short term basis and ignore long term ratification
