Two charged in theft at Mt. Olive Church of God in Cleveland, Tenn.

The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office has charged two people, including a janitor, in a theft from offices of Mt. Olive Church of God, police said.

Debbie Eslinger, 50, and Torrey Hayes, 24, were charged with burglary and theft over $500. Eslinger was also charged with false reports for making false statements to investigators, Bradley County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Bob Gault said in a news release.

The theft at the church on Harrison Pike in Cleveland was discovered on Thanksgiving day. An investigation found that the building and two offices were unlocked by a key, but a third office had forced entry, Gault said.

Items stolen from the church included a laptop, an Xbox 360, a checkbook and a safe containing church documents. Additional investigation found that the Xbox was sold, but detectives were able to recover it, Gault said.

Detectives identified Eslinger, who provided janitorial services for the church, as a possible suspect. When officers interviewed her, they learned Hayes’ identity, Gault said.

The bonds for Eslinger and Hayes were set at $15,000 in a hearing General Sessions Court today. They are both scheduled to be back in court on Dec. 20, Gault said.

Hayes will remain in custody because he has a no bond probation violation warrant from Hamilton County, Gault said.
