McCallie rowers win state, region

The McCallie School crew team won its third consecutive Tennessee and region championships Saturday in the Dogwood Regatta at Oak Ridge. The Dogwood is USRowing's designated regional for Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi, and it was bigger than ever this year with more than 400 boats entered. McCallie won varsity 8, varsity 4, varsity lightweight 4, novice 8 and second novice 4 races and was second in second varsity 8 and second novice 8. In the showcase event, the McCallie varsity 8 of Drew Hettenbach, Ellis Harr, Mike Ray, August Wherry, Nick Cousar, Walt Johnston, Ross Weiser, Fletcher Sims and coxswain J.T. Wu edged the visiting Lincoln Park Juniors from Chicago by 0.91 second. That left the Blue Tornado 30-1 for the spring season, the only loss coming against the Cincinnati Juniors club. Seven of Chattanooga Junior Rowing's 13 boats in the Dogwood Regatta reached the final rounds, and two were winners: Kaleb Bledsoe and Emilio Craddock in men's double scull and David May with brothers Iain, Connor and Quin Nash in men's quad. CJR's Vivian Anderson, Erin Hall, Aubrey Gardin, Ruth Hopkins and coxswain Trinh Keegan were second in women's lightweight 4. McCallie and CJR will compete May 10-12 in the Southeast Junior Championship Regatta in Sarasota, Fla.
