If it seems that the whole world is shopping Thursday, give the credit to two fashion industry insiders.
In 2009, Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and Diane von Furstenberg, president of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, created Fashion's Night Out, an annual celebration of "shopping for a cause."
Now in its fourth year, the event has grown into a global party, with all 50 states represented as well as 20 other countries. The local observance, a first-time event, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. at Hamilton Place, 2100 Hamilton Place Blvd.
"Although the venue for the party is a familiar one, the lineup of events occurring both in and out of stores is sure to provide an evening at the mall unlike any other," according to a news release from mall spokeswoman Catharine Wells. "Select stores will feature unique events, food and promotions throughout the evening."
Participating retailers include Sephora, J. Jill, Dillard's, Belk, White House Black Market, Ann Taylor, Aldo, Banana Republic, Bare Escentuals, Charming Charlie, Coach, Coldwater Creek, Express, Forever 21, Fossil, Talbots, Tommy Hilfiger, New York & Company and Victoria's Secret.
Shoppers at Hamilton Place will be invited to support several local organizations.
• Susan G. Komen for the Cure will throw A Pink Celebration featuring treats from area restaurants and a silent auction.
• The Samaritan Center will set up a Christmas Toyland display where shoppers can shop for clothing items for children in need this holiday season.
• Chattanooga CARES will sponsor the entertainment stage, showcasing several local artists.
Shoppers are asked to bring along vintage fashion magazines to be entered to win a $50 mall gift card. All donated magazines will be given to Hamilton County art teachers to provide inspiration for students participating in a countywide art competition "The Evolution of Fashion," which kicks off in September.
