Lee golfer Emery going to All-America tourney

Lee University junior golfer Matt Emery will be playing in the Patriot All-America Invitational tournament Dec. 29-31 at the Wigwam Resort in Phoenix. He was invited as an NAIA/Golf Coaches Association of America All-American last spring. The field includes 84 players. Only 2012 Ping All-America collegiate golfers -- all NCAA divisions, NAIA and NJCAA -- or 2011 American Junior Golf Association first-team All-Americans now freshmen at GCAA member schools, select members of U.S. service academy golf teams, 2012 members of GCAA international teams and top-five finishers from last year's inaugural Patriot All-America qualify. Alabama's Cory Whitsett is the returning champion. The event is tied to the Folds of Honor, a charity organization that provides scholarships and other assistance to families of fallen or disabled soldiers. Each golfer's bag will be embroidered with the name of a fallen service man or woman, and those eventually will be auctioned to benefit the charity. "I am very excited that Matt has this opportunity to be involved with such an outstanding event," Lee coach John Maupin said. "I want to thank the GCAA and Folds of Honor for putting this together. From what I have heard about the event, it is something the players will remember for the rest of their lives. Of course all of us here will be rooting for Matt and I know he has the ability to compete with anyone, but ultimately this should be about the experience and the cause." Emery's brother Tyler will be his caddie.
