Golf
• FARRAGUT, Tenn. - Ringgold's Richard Rebne, Niota's Jack Oliver and Chattanooga's Bruce Etter each totaled 54-hole scores of 6-over 222 and tied for eighth in the Tennessee PGA Professional Section Championship that ended Wednesday at Fox Den Country Club. The top five earned qualifying spots for the Professional National Championship. Rebne, from Council Fire, is one of three qualifying as an alternate. Scott Moran, the host professional from Fox Den, won the tournament on the second playoff hole, but not before some bizarre happenings. Moran trailed by as many as eight strokes but managed to get into a three-way playoff at 4-over-par, which should've been a four-way. Chris Stacy, of Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap, Va., lost a four-shot lead he had going to No. 16, then inadvertantly signed a scorecard showing him bogeying the second hole when actually he parred it. Once he left the scoring area, he was officially declared 5 over and missed out on the playoff.
Track & Field
• Former University of Tennessee at Chattanooga runner Chris Berry has been named All-Academic by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association for his accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the track in the 2011-12 school year. He was one of only five Southern Conference athletes to be honored. Berry shattered the Mocs' 10,000-meter record and competed in the NCAA outdoor nationals this past spring, and he received his M.B.A. degree in May with a 4.0 grade point average after compiling a 3.84 in his undergraduate years. He was a four-time All-SoCon cross country runner and earned seven all-conference honors in track and field.
Basketball
• Former Duluth (Ga.) High School guard Zane Cobb signed scholarship papers Wednesday to resume his basketball career at Tennessee Temple University. The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Cobb attended West Georgia University this past year but had shoulder surgery last September and was not on the team, so he has four years of eligibility remaining. Temple assistant coach Ezell Dodd had contacted him after his senior year at Duluth, where he averaged 14.7 points, five assists and four rebounds a game as a senior. "I really wanted to play basketball," said Cobb, noting that he had talked also with Mobile, Cleveland State and West Georgia Tech. "I saw a DVD on him and liked the way he shot the ball and how he could switch positions from the 1 to the 2," Dodd said. "Your eye gets caught by a high school big guard." Said new Crusaders head coach Brac Brady: "I understand he can shoot and has good ball-handling skills, and he seems like a good young man. We're looking for good people, and he seems to fit that very well."
Football
• UTC again is offering the "Mocs Meal Deal" for football season tickets. The $75 deal - $35 off regular price - includes a general-admission ticket for each of the five home games plus a meal voucher redeemable for one hot dog, one bag of chips and one Coca-Cola product per game. The offer ends Aug. 13. The package and other ticket arrangements are available by calling 266-MOCS. The first home game is Thursday, Sept. 13, against Glenville State.
Wrestling
• Heidelberg University transfer Tyler Smith from Calhoun, Ga., and Sonoraville High School was one of the two most recent signees for the Cumberland University wrestling program. That gave the Lebanon, Tenn., school 14 wrestling recruits for 2012-13. Smith was a Georgia state qualifier as a junior and was a state runner-up and set a Sonoraville record with 65 wins as a senior. He was 15-18 and the "rookie of the year" in his Heidelberg season, when he was a finalist in one tournament.
HIGH SCHOOLS
• MaxPreps, a CBSsports.com site, has released the first MaxPreps Cup standings and The Baylor School's athletics program has received the No. 23-ranking nationally for the 2011-12 school year. Baylor, which has won 85 state titles in the last decade, won state championships in swimming, tennis, wrestling, soccer, track, fencing and softball. "I am proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes and coaches," Baylor athletic director Thad Lepcio said in a news release. "It's exciting that CBS MaxPreps recognizes the continued success and depth of our athletic program."
