Local officials, park friends and the namesake benefactors are expected to be on hand Friday for dedication ceremonies at Section's new Weathington Park.

Mayor Bob Matthews said plans include a dedication ceremony and ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. CDT combined with musical entertainment, hot dogs and soft drinks. The dedication is sponsored by the Greater Jackson County Chamber of Commerce, he said.

The scenic 13-acre park site was given to the town by Scott and Patty Weathington of Santa Fe, N.M., officials said. The bluff-front site, valued at about $900,000, originally was bought as a possible home site, officials said.

Matthews said the gift of the land "is the largest single charitable donation ever made in the area."
