ST. LOUIS -- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga improved on last year's scoreless NCAA wrestling tournament performance and still has two of its five wrestlers competing today.
Freshman Nick Soto (133) rebounded from an opening-match pin to defeat Old Dominion's Scott Festejo in a third round of consolations, and Brandon Wright (165) won his opener over ninth-seeded David Cheza of Michigan State before losing late Thursday by pin to Penn State's David Taylor. Both are scheduled to wrestle this morning.
After a first-round loss, Dan Waddell (157) rebounded to win his first consolation match, defeating Kent State's Mallie Shuster. He then was eliminated by Lehigh's Brian Tannen.
Levi Clemons (174), the Mocs' late tournament entry, lost both of his matches by major decision.
Appalachian State's Austin Trotman (184), Tony Gravely (125) and Kyle Blevins (165) were still alive, Trotman through three championship rounds. Blevins, who lost the Southern Conference title to Wright in overtime and got into the tournament via an at-large bid, and Gravely had advanced through the third round of consolations after losing their first bouts of the day.
The Citadel's Odie Delaney (285) had a first-round bye and two wins in the championship round, and Turtog Luvsandorj (174) lost his first championship round bout but won his first consolation bout in double overtime.
