Early voting surpasses 1.4 million in Tennessee

NASHVILLE — More than 1.4 million Tennesseans cast ballots during early voting for the Nov. 6 election, state officials said today.

But the turnout, while high, failed to break the record set by the November 2008 presidential election. It fell nearly 60,000 votes short after the GOP-led General Assembly cut the early voting period by two days.

Still, Secretary of State Tré Hargett said today that 1,456,824 voters turned out during early voting, which began Oct. 17 and ended Thursday. More than 134,000 voters cast their ballots across the state Thursday for president, Congress and the state Legislature.

“I am extremely pleased with the success of early voting for this important election,” said Hargett, who oversees elections, in a news release. “County election officials are now finalizing preparations for Election Day, and I encourage all eligible voters who have not cast their ballots yet to take advantage of the opportunity to exercise their right to vote on Tuesday.”

Voters with questions about Election Day polling places and hours are encouraged to contact their county election commissions.
