Gluten-free bakery opens

Crave Café & Bakery, Chattanooga's first exclusively gluten-free restaurant, will open in Warehouse Row in early 2013. The cafe and bakery is the first brick-and-mortar location for executive chef Karen Wilson, whose Crave Catering has been serving up gluten-free creations since 2010.

"Crave Café gives options to people who can't eat gluten, or simply choose not to," said Wilson. "We are filling an unmet need for delicious, healthy alternatives to high-carb, gluten-laden foods in Chattanooga."

Construction on the 700 square-foot space in Warehouse Row's lower level Mercantile will begin in November.

MacLean to build Trenton plant

MacLean Power Systems announced Monday it will build a $12 million manufacturing plant in Trenton, Tenn. The Gibson County project is anticipated to create 250 jobs.

"MacLean Power Systems has a global presence, so this announcement speaks well for how attractive the Tennessee business climate is," Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam said in a statement.

MacLean is a leading manufacturer of products used globally by electric utilities for building transmission and distribution lines and substations.

The facility is projected to begin initial operations in the first half of 2013.

Y-12 hires workers from contractor

The managing contractor of the Y-12 National Security Complex said it has hired more than 560 employees from its former security subcontractor, which lost its contract after three protesters cut through fences and vandalized a building in an unprecedented break-in.

B&W Y-12, the company that manages the nuclear weapons plant at Oak Ridge, terminated WSI Oak Ridge at the beginning of October and took direct responsibility for security. Retired Brig. Gen. Rod Johnson, who oversees security operations for B&W Y-12, said there has already been improvement in security performances following the contracting changes.
