The Southeastern Conference will be served another round of cupcakes this weekend when LSU hosts Idaho, Georgia hosts Florida Atlantic and Vanderbilt hosts Presbyterian.

Of course, not everybody has enjoyed their nonconference feast.

Arkansas suffered one of the more shocking defeats in league history last Saturday when the No. 8 Razorbacks lost 34-31 in overtime to Louisiana-Monroe and promptly vanished from the nation’s elite. Such setbacks can weaken the perception of the SEC, but some of the league coaches were offering praise Wednesday to the Warhawks.

“ULM had not beaten a ranked team until beating Arkansas,” LSU coach Les Miles said. “Congratulations to Todd Berry and his team on a great win. They showed all of college football that it really doesn’t make any difference — it’s based on the Saturday you play.”

Said South Carolina’s Steve Spurrier: “I read where they had six fourth-down conversions. That’s how you upset a big team. Give that guy credit. He went there to win the game.”

ULM quarterback Kolton Browning threw for 412 yards and rushed for 69 against the Razorbacks and will take his talents Saturday to Auburn, which is reeling after a 28-10 loss at Mississippi State. It would be easy to label Auburn upset bait this weekend, but what about Mississippi State’s trip to Troy?

“I’m sure our guys are in class right now still getting pats on the back for their great win last week,” MSU coach Dan Mullen said.

Pasquali’s Pix:

Glenville State at UTC: Every visit from Glenville State results in a $4.8 billion economic impact for this city. Or not. Mocs 41, Pioneers 10.

Presbyterian at Vanderbilt: Commodores coach James Franklin understandably said Wednesday that this game “cannot come soon enough.” Commodores 40, Blue Hose 7.

Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn: Auburn’s 108th-rated offense is ready for its 109th-rated defense to start picking up the slack. Tigers 33, Warhawks 16.

Alabama at Arkansas: Let’s hope CBS announcer Verne Lundquist has some entertaining yarns to spin once this thing gets out of hand. Crimson Tide 38, Razorbacks 13.

MTSU at Memphis: The winner of this gets the loser of Friday’s Baylor-Ensworth game. Blue Raiders 24, Tigers 19.

Florida at Tennessee: There are second-graders all over the world who have never witnessed a Vols victory over the Gators. Vols 27, Gators 24.

UAB at South Carolina: Spurrier is seeking his 200th win as a college coach, and he’s 45-0 against teams from non-BCS leagues. Gamecocks 38, Blazers 9.

Florida Atlantic at Georgia: According to sources close to the situation, the Bulldogs have an edge in talent. Bulldogs 52, Owls 3.
