Cleveland student advances in American Legion Oratorical Contest

A student from Cleveland, Tenn., was in the semifinals Saturday afternoon in the American Legion Oratorical Contest in Indianapolis.

Victoria Vest and eight other teens from across the nation were the top finishers in a field of 53, according to a news release. They were to go head-to-head later Saturday in hopes of making the final three. The winner will receive an $18,000 college scholarship. The first and second runners-up receive $16,000 and $14,000 scholarships respectively.

The annual American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program encourages young people to improve communications skills and study the U.S. Constitution, the release stated.
