A Bradley County man wanted on 32 charges of burglary remained at large Tuesday night.
His alleged accomplice, meanwhile, is in custody. The Bradley County Sheriff's Office arrested 34-year-old April Michelle Gammill, of Cleveland, about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. She was charged with evading arrest, resisting arrest and simple possession. She does not appear to be involved in the burglary operations, just an escape from police, authorities said.
Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Kristin Helm said Gammill spent Monday night in the woods. On Tuesday morning, she visited some houses near Mountain Road. There, she walked door to door, asking people if she could borrow their phone.
That's when someone called police.
However, the TBI is still looking for Howard Callaway, 39, of Cleveland. On Monday, a TBI agent pulled Callaway over at the intersection of Bancroft Road and Harrison Pike. The agent prepared to serve a warrant related to a string of burglaries.
But as the agent approached the suspect's vehicle, according to a TBI press release, the man drove toward the agent, the agent fired his gun, and the suspect took off. Authorities said Callaway drove two miles down Harrison Pike before he and Gammill hopped out and ran away.
The TBI does not release the names of its agents who have been involved in shootings, but the agent was not hurt. The bureau does not believe Callaway or Gammill were hurt, either.
The manhunt for Callaway continued unsuccessfully Tuesday. Helm could not say how large the scope of the investigation is, but not as many officers are involved as they were on Monday, when members of TBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Bradley County and Hamilton County sheriff's offices searched for Callaway.
Some Bradley County deputies helped Tuesday, said sheriff's spokesman Bob Gault, but he could not say how many.
