The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's tennis team will begin the 2013 part of its schedule by hosting Kennesaw State at 6 p.m. today and Belmont at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Racquet Club in Hixson. The Lady Mocs are coming off a 16-6 in 2012, the most wins for the program since 1999, with three-time All-Southern Conference selection Jenna Nurik now a senior, junior Alexa Flynn, 2012 SoCon freshman of the year Kaylene Chadwell and fellow sophomore Claire Mulyadi back from that team and a highly rated group of five newcomers for coach Jeff Clark. The UTC men (1-1) host Belmont at 10 a.m. Sunday at the Racquet Club.
• Milligan College senior Evan Alfano from Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga was the Appalachian Swimming Conference men's swimmer of the week for his performance in the Buffaloes' tri-meet last weekend against Kentucky colleges Union and Lindsey Wilson. Alfano won the 100-meter breaststroke with a 1:09.25 finish, was third in the 50 freestyle in 25.95 and anchored the 400 free relay. "Evan is the leader of this team and our lone senior. He works hard every day," Milligan coach R.C. Weston said in a school release.
• Haley Soles and Jessie Blankenship led Covenant College with eight points each in a 62-37 loss Thursday evening at Agnes Scott in Decatur, Ga. Tiffany Jones and Arielle Register led the winners with 18 and 16, and Morgan Cooper had 10 rebounds.
• Ish Sanders from Cleveland High School scored a team-high 21 points in Carson-Newman's 80-63 home basketball loss Wednesday night against nationally ranked Lincoln Memorial.
• UTC women's basketball assistant coach Nikki West will be the guest speaker for the Mocs Club's "Breakfast With the Coach" at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wally's Restaurant on McCallie Avenue. The public is invited to attend and order off the menu; reservations are not required.
