about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

ABC News reported last night that official portraits of cabinet secretaries cost $20,000 to $40,000 each. This is an example of federal government waste. Senator Tom Coburn reported finding $85 billion in waste. Rather than eliminate waste, the politicians are cutting essential services that negatively affect everyone. By the way, a photograph transferred to a canvas cost $100 each.

Can you imagine a business so efficient it cannot possibly avoid increasing cost by 2-5% over a ten year period? Most can reduce cost, not just reduce the increase in cost, by restructuring and reducing the hierarchy and non essential spending. When department heads are politically savvy and business management ignorant it can result in chaos. Heaven forbid that government compensation be adjusted to that of the private sector for like work. The federal government doing that may lead to state and local governments doing it also wouldn't that be just awful? Proper staffing may result in the mental giant congress woman Waters prediction being accurate when she said the reduced spending would cause 170 million Americans of the 135 million currently employed to lose their job.

The first round of sequestration budget cuts should be pay and benefits for all of Congress, past and present. They are the idiots that created this mess in the first place.

fairmon said...

Pay benefits are not how a member of congress becomes wealthy or grows more wealthy. Eliminate the compensation or severely reduce it and very few if any would leave voluntarily. It is naive to think with the size of the federal government with millions of employees that wasteful spending and fraud is not well over $500 billion per year. Duplication and overlapping of duties is a comparable amount. Would it be too big a burden to require a cost/benefit analysis of any new regulation? Would it be too big a burden to have each department head start at zero and justify next years spending instead of an across the board X% increase based on what was spent last year?

Who set senator Menendez up? Who paid the girl to read the script and made the video she says she didn't agree to? He paid the over $58,000 for the plane trips after that became public although he maintains they were not a gift? He didn't say what they were just what they were not. I wonder. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if most government waste was just routine junk that gets folded into the budgets year after year: deadwood employees, duplication of duties, obsolete processes that nobody cares about.

What gets press are those special projects like bridges to nowhere and clothes museums. I bet those are a drop in the bucket, and as a whole probably do more good than all that boring non-newsworthy waste in the bureaucracy.

I wish each agency director had to cut their budgets 1% per year for 10 years and they had discretion over the cuts.

Nice cartoon Clay. Putting the country back together bass ackwards is a great metaphor. Well done.

This sequester is a B movie (magic act if you prefer Clay’s version) put on by Republican and Democratic members of ‘SAG’ – the ‘Screen Actors Guild’. To capture our imagination, they gave the move the name "Sequestration". Sounds like a Hollywood block buster doesn’t it? The corporate media movie reviews present it as a real thriller of a show and the trailer’s byline is; ‘The fate of a nation hangs in the balance.’ Ooohh, now that’s entertainment; but there is about as much substance to this bullsh!t as pro wrestling. In the WWF at least they hit each other sometimes. Considering what we paying for this show, I don’t think it out of line we demand congress throw some punches or body slams. I’d personally delight in seeing Mitch McConnell bashed over the head with a metal folding chair. But I digress.

I’m sorry to sound cranky but I think we’re headed for another collapse. Ask yourself, don’t all the numbers point to this? The 16 trillion dollar debt, disastrous trade policies, monstrous trade deficit, massive derivatives and toxic assets still on the books at major banks, the rising stock market (another bubble?), a stagnant consumption based economy combined with a stagnant job market. The puzzle pieces indicate, to me anyway, that the hard times haven't really hit yet. The amount of money being debated in this show are as about important as the impact of a housefly on the back of a Hippopotamus. I’m convinced this contrived conflict is to convince the public to pick a side in the left right paradigm, to take your eyes of the ball, to distract us from the fact that the congress and the entire federal government is utterly and criminally corrupt.

If fathoming a 16 trillion dollar debt makes your head spin, try to imagine a quadrillion dollars (yea a quadrillion) of (still toxic) derivatives - in a stock market - that is ‘only’ valued at around 15+- trillion. Your head will explode! This is figuratively (literally too?) a financial markets IED! Do some research, and if you’re like me, you’ll become more than a tad nervous. Unless there are drastic changes now, the U.S. is economy may very well crash again sooner or later.

Are politicians aren't going to tell us this? HELL NO! Are the media going to tell us this. NAH! They’re going to give us this goddamn dog & pony show till the very end, and make no mistake, that's what this outrage is: a dog & pony show.

The truth is, the government will spend all the money it wants to – where it wants to - when it wants to! Perfect example; Cuts? Sequestration?…how much for Egypt this week Mr.Kerry?

Continued from above.

It's not like they have just X amount to draw from. REMEMBER, the dollar is totally/completely debt based. All money (100%) is loaned into existence by the FED; a privately owned banking cartel. Even when there aren't enough buyers for U.S. bonds (the Saudi’s, the Chinese etc.) to cover the money they want to print, the FED buys back its own bonds - WOW – aka monetizing the debt. And/or they resort to printing money out of thin air, not even respecting the rules of their own debt scheme. So, all the cuts being talked about, sawing Uncle Sam in half; it’s because they have to make you believe their (magic) show is real. They want us all to believe that they are doing their best to save us all. Its bull cookies! This is another con-job of epic proportions, nothing more.

Look out Iran, We’ll be over for a visit soon.

limeric...welcome to the Tea Party. I couldn't have described it better myself.

nooga....we conservatives have been saying this for years and you liberals have given us a hard time. So we were right after all.

This is one true conservative that doesn't care where the cuts come from just so they come. If some of you mean that "conservatives" don't want the military cut, you might be right. I think it needs to be cut much more. Waste in the military is out of control just like every other part of the budget.

To show you how ridiculous both sides are, if the sequester was a debt payment and we had a sequester every week, we could pay down the debt in 188 weeks or 3.61 years. It is only approximately 2.3 % of the total budget and it is just a slow down in budget increases. It does nothing to balance the budget or pay down the debt.

This discussion is a joke. What liberals are really after is more taxes. Why don't you just say so? By the way, if new revenue was guaranteed to go to pay the deficit, it might make sense but that is not the case. It would be spent by the liberals or given away in tax cuts by the Republicans. Both would use it to buy votes.

If you don't cut now, when? Liberals will never cut anything except the military and increase everywhere else. They use "free stuff" to buy votes. Romney was dead right about the 47%. I wouldn't doubt that the percent was higher than that.

First sequester cuts: $83,000,000,000

Subsidies to the top 10 banks: $83,000,000,000

Republican faux Ayn Rand devotees decry social programs create a lack of a work ethic and a sense of false entitlements. This coming from sh!theads that get FREE healthcare, $174,000 a year to do everything…except actually work.

Thus; No matter how Republicons word ‘spending cuts’, it means one thing and one thing only. Cut Medicare and Social Security – Period!

And for the President. Picture a Dos Equis add with Obama, “I don’t always promise to keep -- social security -- off the table. But when I do -- it’s -- only a campaign promise -- I’ll drop -- once I got elected.” :-D

Why would anyone support this? You’re NOT hurting him. You are hurting yourself.

It's always about the money and I just got richer today. Glad I bought those gun stocks after Sandy Hook! When the Dems are in power invest in the vices and guns. Booze stocks are doing great as well as the casinos. Once Rubio or Cruz takes power buy defense contractor and oil company stocks. Republicans like to blow stuff up. For many years, it was impossible for the federal government to hire as many qualified engineers and scientists as they needed. Because of this, a lot of idiots ended up in those jobs. Then the Great Recession came along, and suddenly federal technical/scientific/engineering jobs looked pretty good.

So, now, all of those people are taking a 20% pay cut under sequestration. Imagine what they're going to do as the economy recovers . . . jump ship back to the real world, of course, and leave your federal government in worse shape than ever.

I haven't heard whether the cuts apply to doctors and nurses in the U S Public Health Service, the Centers for Disease Control, Veterans Administration hospitals, etc., but if they do, you can look for things to get worse all over the place.

Some will say it's time the feds shared the pain. The pain they have endured goes back to the end of the Vietnam conflict when budgets were cut. They finally approached pay parity -- guess when -- so many people in the private sector lost their jobs.

So, anyone who thinks that the government is their savior just got put into a position where their services have shrunk 20% overnight. Enjoy it. You voted for it.

How quaint. I wonder how many people will celebrate your death.

"So much for the wonderful Cuban healthcare system where Hugo was treated."

Sir...people in the United States die every single day of the week after many months of treatment to attempt to stop the spreading of cancer. If you knew a thing about anything, and if you were capable of setting aside your own ignorance for a few moments, you might discover that Cuba has an excellent health care system.

"I wonder if Barry and Queen Michelle will attend the funeral?"

Who knows? Who cares? Hugo Chavez might have been ostracized by GWB, who is now persona non-Grata in his own country, but Hugo Chavez was a well loved man and a national leader.

There is no comparison.

Tune into his funeral this upcoming Friday. Then think about what your own will be like. Your opinion of the man is of no consequence, you ignoramus.

Al said “Who knows? Who cares? Hugo Chavez might have been ostracized by GWB, who is now persona non-Grata in his own country, but Hugo Chavez was a well loved man and a national leader.”

Yeah, he was loved by the poor who he paid off to vote for him, but why don’t you ask the opposition leaders who were forced to flee the country, and those who were arrested after openly criticizing Chavez if they love him? Why don’t you ask the general manager of the TV station where Chavez yanked the broadcast license because they had been critical of Chavez. Why don’t you ask the newspapers, TV and radio stations that did nothing but praise Chavez out of fear of losing their license if they loved Chavez?

Chavez was so loved that the Inter American Commission on Human Rights, issued a report saying Chavez’s government constrained free expression, the rights of citizens to protest and the ability of opposition politicians to function. It also outlined how the president held tremendous influence over the judiciary, with judges whose decisions the government didn’t like being fired.

Chavez was a dictator who hated this country and financial aid to socialist regimes like Cuba, Bolivia and Ecuador, and conducted business with Iran.

See what Human Rights Watch had to say about this man who Al said was so well loved.
