Miller leads 49-7 romp for Tyner Rams

By Tim Rogers

For the second time this football season, Tyner notched its first District 6-AA win Friday night at Bob Evans Stadium.

Earlier this week, the Rams forfeited two wins after playing an ineligible player in its first six games. They got back on track in district play with a 49-7 homecoming victory over Howard.

The win improves the Rams' record to 1-6, 1-2. With district games remaining against Brainerd, East Ridge and Red Bank, the playoff regulars still control their postseason destiny.

"Whether we had to forfeit those two games or not, we still have to run the table to finish second in the district and make the playoffs because of the way we started," said Tyner coach Wayne Turner. "The kids responded really well all week."

Quarterback Haasan Miller responded early and often. Miller first scored on a 4-yard run, and his 41-yard touchdown pass to C.J. Ryals with 30 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Rams a 20-0 lead.

Miller accounted for four touchdowns before leaving the game after Tyner's first possession in the third quarter. The senior had two rushing touchdowns and added 131 yards and two TDs on 5-of-6 passing.

"Our mindset this week was to improve," he said. "We really didn't pay no attention to [the forfeits].

"We knew we had to win out going in. Every day is a playoff game."

Sadik Spence started the Tyner offensive onslaught with a 10-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Spence gave Tyner a 42-7 lead just before halftime on a 4-yard score. The clock ran continuously in the second half.

Terrance Brooks, who played both quarterback and split end, had the lone highlight for Howard (1-6, 0-3). Brooks took an end-around pitch, emerged from a pile of tacklers and sprinted 54 yards for a touchdown.

Two plays later, Miller connected with Jarrett Watson for a 52-yard TD and Willie Stewart scored from 1 yard out in Tyner's 22-point second quarter.

"We ran the ball and threw the ball a lot better than we have been," Turner said of his team's 326 total yards. "If we can keep improving, I think there's a lot of good things in store for us down the road."
