A two-hour car caravan/walking tour Saturday, Aug. 23, will reveal the “Faces Behind the Monuments” at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park.

The free program will begin at 2 p.m. from the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitors Center, 3370 LaFayette Road in Fort Oglethorpe.

Just over 25 years after the Battle of Chickamauga scarred the landscape and left thousands dead, veterans from both sides returned to established the federal park. To mark where soldiers fought, they placed stone and iron monuments. “In bas relief images and honored words,” says spokeswoman Kim Coons, “these monuments remain today as sentinels and storytellers to the memories of those who lived through the horror of this battle.”
