Lookout opens nighttime farmers market on Southside

Chattanooga's first nighttime farmers market will kick off tonight, Aug. 21, on the Southside. The new market, which is affiliated with Lookout Farmers Market, will begin grand-opening ceremonies at 6 p.m. at The Crash Pad on Johnson Street. The market will run 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays through November.

Earlier this week, Lookout Farmers Market added a Hamilton Place Market to its schedule. It runs from 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays at New Hope Presbyterian Church on Shallowford Road. It will be set up weekly through Christmas.

Its Monday time slot fills a gap to give the city a farmers market every day of the week. Lookout Farmers Market operates five of those.

• Mondays at Hamilton Place: New Hope Presbyterian Church, 7301 Shallowford Road, 4-7 p.m.

• Tuesdays in East Brainerd: Audubon Acres, 900 N. Sanctuary Road, 4-7 p.m.

• Thursdays in Lookout Mountain, Ga.: Fairyland City Hall, 1214 Lula Lake Road, 3-7 p.m.

• Thursdays on the Southside: The Crash Pad, 29 Johnson St., 6-9 p.m.

• Fridays in St. Elmo: Incline Railway, 3917 St. Elmo Ave.

The principle of "Know your farmer, know your food" is the watchword of the Lookout Farmers Market, says manager Lori Carter.

All participating farmers and producers are located within 100 miles of the market and use sustainable farming practices. Locally grown fresh produce, baked goods, grass-fed meats, free-range eggs, herbs, breads, cakes, pastries, jam, nuts, doggie treats, fresh-squeezed lemonade, herbs, candles, soap, botanicals, art, jewelry, prepared foods and food carts are featured at the markets, along with weekly entertainment, educational programs and fun activities.

The Lookout Farmers Market accepts SNAP/EBT cards to make organically grown, fresh, local produce more affordable and available to low-income families.
