Anti-UAW workers seek own union at VW

Some Volkswagen employees in Chattanooga, who've talked in the past about organizing their own union, are moving forward with the effort and hope to have an election.

Anti-United Auto Workers employee Mike Burton said the proposed union will be the initial chapter of the American Council of Employees to counter the UAW Local 42. He said if it collects about 500 signatures of employees, it can seek an election from the company

He said the chapter collected 108 on its first day.

"We are in a rush thinking that there will be an announcement on the 26th that VW will announce that it has given office space to the new UAW Local 42 in our plant," the website said.

It said it wants to help the company establish a works council within the confines of United States law.

"That is it. We have no political agenda. We will not be doing community activities. We will not be going to Lake Winnie or giving out t-shirts and water bottles. Our focus is strictly to improve the communication between Volkswagen and we, the employees," said the website.
