48-Launch aims at training ideas

Chattanooga business accelerator Co.Lab's annual startup competition, 48Hour Launch, will focus on education and workforce development this year. The two-day event helps entrepreneurs turn ideas into a startups in just one weekend. The winning team walks away with $1,000 and a package of free business services.

"Business solutions that improve educational experiences in the classroom, the workplace and beyond are in high demand across nearly every sector of the economy," said Mike Bradshaw, executive director of Co.Lab.

48Hour Launch: The Learning Edition will take place March 28 to 30, and applications are due by March 18.

Luxury homes sell at discount

A Soddy-Daisy lakeside estate listed for $2.8 million finally sold for $825,000 during a do-over auction on Jan. 23, weeks after the winning bid from the first auction in November 2013 fell apart. New York-based Concierge Auctions coordinated the sale of 1997 Emerald Pointe Drive, which closed Feb. 3 for well less than the listed $850,000 auction reserve.

Karl and Margaret Kinkead sold the 6,700 square-foot-home to Specialty Property Investments, LLC, the same company that purchased J. Don Brock's mansion on Missionary Ridge in January for $1.3 million, or $1 million less than its appraised value.
