DECATUR, Ala. — Police say they don't expect charges to be filed against a woman accused in her stepson's accidental shooting death.
Decatur police Lt. John Crouch says Cynthia Bowman told investigators she was holding a pistol that had been having mechanical problems when it fired without the trigger being pulled early Monday morning. Crouch says witnesses gave the same account of the incident.
Bowman told the Decatur Daily that 17-year-old Kedrick Bowman was giving her a hug when the gun misfired and that she and her husband want to speak openly about the incident to curb speculation.
Police have said the teen was wounded in his head. He was kept on life support so that his organs could be donated.
The gun has been sent to a forensic lab for testing.
