'Abstract Expressions' spotlights McKissic, Young

Graffiti, a modern art gallery at 505 Cherokee Blvd., will host an opening reception from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, July 11, for a new exhibit, "Abstract Expressions: The Paintings of James McKissic and Larry Young," which continues through Wednesday, Sept. 3. McKissic, whose works include "Coeur," right, a 40- by 30-inch acrylic on canvas, is a self-taught painter who creates nonobjective works in mixed media that evoke his rural, agricultural and African-American ancestry. Young, whose works include "Storm Fire," left, a 29- by 22-inch acrylic on canvas, is a former Hamilton County prosecutor who has immersed himself in painting since his retirement.
