Charges upgraded for west TN man accused in wife's killing

JACKSON, Tenn. - Police say a charge against a Madison County man accused of fatally shooting his wife has been upgraded to first-degree murder.

Jackson police say 42-year-old Michael Smith Sr. was indicted on Wednesday. He is being held on $500,000 bond and has a scheduled arraignment Monday.

Smith was originally charged with second-degree murder after 36-year-old Christy Smith was found dead of a single gunshot wound in their home in August. Police say he left the house in his truck after the shooting.

Police said officers searched the area near his work and found Smith's abandoned truck on the property. Police say a police dog found Smith hiding in a bathroom.

The Associated Press could not determine who Smith's lawyer is.
