LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A group that cares for animals says a dog that was shot several times and then thrown into a Lawrenceville trash bin has injuries that are worse than first thought.
A metro Atlanta veterinarian had said the dog, named Catie, was expected to survive.
However, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Humane Friends of Georgia has given veterinarians at the University of Georgia permission to euthanize the 2-year-old Irish Terrier.
Humane Friends said in a statement posted on its website that Catie's spinal cord was severed and she had a piece of shrapnel lodged in her heart.
Authorities have said the dog wasn't found with any tags or collar that might identify her owner.
