about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

I suspect that the TFP requires a high percentage of local content from Clay and both editorialists. Why else would there be so little coverage of the bigger topics in the world? This small silly partisan cartoon is probably Clay's effort to fill his local coverage quota to keep the TFP paymaster happy.

After the US bungled the sub rosa intervention into Ukrainian politics and the mostly Russian populated Crimea took shelter with mother Russia, Obama missed the perfect opportunity to STFU. Trying to control the internal politics of country after country in order to implement some grand geopolitical plan has the US looking worse and worse on the world stage. US economic muscle has atrophied and all that is left is an over-sized military that the US can no longer afford. (Reflections of the USSR circa 1989)

Over 60% of the country is in favor of sanctions(which President Obama has imposed)however, it's the wingnut crowd headed by people like John McCain(the bomb now, ask questions later neocon)who want war with Putin. Of course most of them won't be fighting but they will be more than happy to sit back and watch others do their fighting for them.

Look at the comments so far. I don't see any left-wing whiners. The whining seems to be coming from all of the low information faux conservatives, who believe that they should be in charge of the subject content of this forum and this nation.

Some of you appear to believe that the United States needs to meddle in yet another nation in turmoil.

Nothing is written about a United States Senator or two, who were elected to represent the people of their home districts in Washington D.C., meddling in the affairs that are absolutely none of our business, and in my humble opinion, represents a dereliction of duty of their elected positions as U.S. lawmakers.

I could not care less what goes on in Crimea. Seems to me that the people of that region want to be folded in to Russia. My life as an American will not change one bit if Russia rules Crimea.

What business is it of anyone of you?

What do any one of you care what goes on in another nation? What makes you believe that it is the business of the United States to meddle in the affairs of any foreign nation having problems of any description?

We are not the world's police department.

March 18, 2014 at 8:27 a.m.

We've already meddled in the Ukraine. It is none of our business, but we look ridiculous with these sanctions, and BO scolding Russia is embarrassing. We've backed the opposition there, and it was a mistake. BO has already meddled in Libya, Egypt, and Syria. Crimea wants to be part of Russia overwhelmingly.

March 18, 2014 at 8:50 a.m.

Our military is constantly being weakened, our real unemployment rate is 14% or higher, our borders are weak/politicians want to reward illegal aliens for breaking in so they can gain from it, we are becoming more and more in debt to Russia's close ally China , and we spend time fretting about giving transvestites and women more combat opportunities. No wonder they laugh at us. There's a good chance, if she runs, that our next POTUS could be Hellary, and she's already gotten off to a rotten start way in advance by comparing Putin to Hitler. Putin will be around for a long time. Yeah, we're looking good.

It's amazing to read the comments from those who think President Obama has somehow weakened the U.S. because he refuses to threaten Putin with some type of military action. Let's suppose just for one minute President Obama did threaten military action. Putin takes the threat and decides to react to it by issuing his own threat such as if the U.S. is willing to use its military against Russis then be prepared for the same action from Russia. What happens next? Are all of these stupid, ignorant chickenhawks ready to take that chance? Are they ready to consider the reality of what a REAL NUCLEAR attack on the U.S. would look like?

" McCain Compares Russia To A Gas Station"

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) on Sunday called for economic sanctions against Russia, arguing that they would be effective since its economy depends on oil and gas exports.

"Russia is a gas station masquerading as a country," he said on CNN's "State of the Union."

While McCain said that in the short term Russia has won Crimea, the U.S. can still work to help Ukraine gain that land back in the long term.

McCain said that in addition to sanctions the U.S. needs a long term military plan to help Ukraine, but not one that will lead to American troops in the region. The senator suggested aid to the Ukrainian military so "at least so they can defend themselves."

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/mccain-russia-sanctions-gas-station

How long before his suggested "military aid" becomes troops on the ground?

Where were any of you whining about President Obama's foreign policies when GWB essentially did nothing but call Putin a bully when Russia invaded the nation of Georgia in 2008?

Many innocent people died when Russia invaded that nation and in the months afterward.

Was GWB weak because he did next to nothing, as some of you have called our current President?

Is it any wonder why when you people write such things, that we laugh at them?

The current President showing restraint and refrain from rushing in with military force is a most welcome and a measured response, compared to actions of the past by fellow leaders.

Rather than to appreciate his level-headedness, you bash the man.

The thought that comforts me the most, is that history books will never contain one word any of you write in here on s daily basis, and school children will be taught to appreciate the man for his actions as President.

Ibs, not all of us think military action is the answer. We can only hope this is not the beginning of a Russian march on other countries. Obama has no choice in the matter, our military is so weakened it would be stupid to even try. Two wars and the cuts to military reduce the might of the US.

March 18, 2014 at 9:34 a.m.

McCain isn't president, he's not the SOS, and he has no chance of being president, unlike Hellary. Bringing up Bush doesn't make BO look any better. BO, Kerry and Hellary are not handling this well. They look stupid.

Being weak and self-destructive at home doesn't help us around the world. It makes us look ridiculous and our criticism gets no respect.

No, you're ridiculous and each and everyday teabaggers and nutjobs prove it. Having a "stronger military" is no threat to Putin. For all of your "tough talk" about how weak President Obama is just makes you look even more stupid. But then what to expect from a teabagger? GET A LIFE because your continued display of your hatred for President Obama is BORING. YOU CAN'T DO ONE THING ABOUT HIM BEING PRESIDENT, NADA, ZILCH EXCEPT WHINE EVERYDAY NO MATTER THE TOPIC OF THE DAY. GET OVER IT. HE GOT ELECTED AND UNTIL JAN. 2016 HE IS GOING TO BE THE PRESIDENT. YOU GOT NOTHING AND EVIDENTLY YOU NEVER WILL HAVE ANYTHING EXCEPT YOUR HATRED. NO TEABAGGER IS GOING TO BE ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THIS COUNTRY. NOT NOW OR IN THE FUTURE.

I understand your hatred of the REAL REPUBLICAN PARTY. In 2008 when Barack Obama was elected, they knew they had been outdone. Along came the teabaggers, a loud, ignorant bunch that made alot of noise and people in the beginning listened and some managed to get elected in 2010. Repubs thought they could use this bunch to help them get back the White House. However, by the time 2012 rolled around the majority of the people of this country knew the teabaggers were nothing more than a fringe element of kooks, nutjobs and extremists and they REJECTED them and anyone associated with them.

Now the REAL REPUBLICANS want you out of their party but they don't have the guts to put you out. So, people like Rove and some others are secretly raising all kinds of money to make sure teabaggers don't get on any ballots because they know that is a recipe for disaster and a loss. It's why someone like Carr has absolutely no chance against Lamar Alexander. It's why Repubs are pulling out all the stops in Kentucky to make sure Turtle face Mitch McConnell wins the primary because they know if that teabagger wins, Kentucky may elect a Democrat counterpart to Rand Paul. They already have a Democrat Governor.

Teabaggers are weak and they are self-destructive, the REAL REPUBLICANS KNOW IT AND SO DOES EVERYONE ELSE. Getting up every day complaining about President Obama gets you no where. 2010 WAS YOUR BEST YEAR BUT SOON AFTER THE AMERICAN PEOPLE DISCOVERED MOST TEABAGGERS WERE NOT ABOUT CONSTRUCTION BUT RATHER DESTRUCTION AND THEY HAVE REJECTED TEABAGGERS AND THEIR CANDIDATES.

We have weapon systems that require less soldiers, but offer even more firepower. You clowns don't have a clue on how the military works. Nixon(bombing and invasion of Cambodia) as did Bush43(invasion and bombing of Iraq). So let's see: Herbert Hoover = Great Depression; George W. See this is what is meant by low-information voters. It's like taking candy from a baby to expose this kind of ignorance. President Obama was not the one that declared the recession ended in 2009:

"NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Great Recession ended in June 2009,according to the body charged with dating when economic downturns begin and end.

But the news is little comfort to the millions of Americans still out of work, underwater on their mortgages or uncertain about the future.

The National Bureau of Economic Research, an independent group of economists, released a statement Monday saying economic data now clearly point to the economy turning higher last summer. That makes the 18-month recession that started in December 2007 the longest and deepest downturn for the U.S. economy since the Great Depression

There is a chart that shows the length of recent recessions on the link provided.
