East Ridge police search for gunman — and more Chattanooga police news

East Ridge police search for gunman

East Ridge police are looking for a man they say fired several shots at three people standing around a car in an alley next to 3302 Navajo Drive on Tuesday.

Officers went to the area of Frawley Street and South Germantown Road where a Chattanooga police officer had been flagged down by the victims, a news release from the East Ridge Police Department stated.

Police were told a light-skinned black man wearing a gray hoodie approached a group of people in the alley — four were in a parked vehicle and three were standing around the vehicle. The suspect fired a handgun multiple times, police said.

None of the victims was struck. They ran away.

Police learned the suspect left the area but do not know in which direction or whether he was on foot or in a vehicle.

Members of the East Ridge Police Department’s criminal investigation division are working on the incident.

A 29-year-old woman is in stable condition at a local hospital after being taken there when she sustained a gunshot wound in her face.

The Chattanooga Police Department said it responded Monday night to a call of a person being shot at apartment A at 3704 West Ave. When they arrived, officers found Tanika Caldwell wounded.

A news release from the police department said anyone with information is asked to call the department at 423-698-2525 or Crime Stoppers at 423-698-3333.

Murder suspect caught in Memphis

The man charged in a Jan. 28 fatal shooting of 25-year-old Raphael White on Sixth Avenue in Chattanooga was captured Monday in Memphis, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

Rodney Jennings Jr., also known as “Big Head,” was sought by Chattanooga police and the TBI in the slaying on charges of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon.

Jennings was located at an apartment complex on Oak Bark Lane in Memphis. He was taken into custody without incident by members of the U.S. Marshals Gulf Coast regional task force and is being held in the Shelby County Jail.

Jennings was added to the TBI’s Most Wanted list 30 days ago.

When police got to the scene of the shooting in January, they found White with a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at Erlanger hospital.
