Thanks to Memorial and other letters to the editors

Thanks to Memorial

Just a few lines to publicly thank Memorial (North Park) Hospital for the good care I received during my recent three short stays. From admittance to emergency room, ICU, regular room, the staff, nurses, doctors, technicians and workers, seemed to care about my comfort healing. Our community is so blessed to have this hospital in our midst. Thanks.

Hate must be taught

The song "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" was written in 1946 for the musical "South Pacific" by Richard Rogers (words) and Oscar Hammerstein II (music). The words rang true then and continue to ring true now and will always and forever. When the neo-Nazis came to Chattanooga recently over the Holocaust remembrance weekend, that hate has to be carefully taught. As a singer, I always associate events with songs. The neo-Nazis bringing Swastikas to our beautiful city brought back memories of past events like the neo-Nazi marches in Skokie, Ill., in the 1970s and the words of this song: "You've got to be taught to hate and fear, You've got to be taught from year to year. It's got to be drummed in your dear little ear -- you've got to be carefully taught! You've got to be taught before it's too late -- before you are 6 or 7 or 8, to hate all the people your relatives hate -- you've got to be carefully taught!"

Highway 58 and progress

We welcomed the VW plant with open arms into our community with the understanding that we would benefit in many ways. This has not happened. Our schools, some of the oldest, have not seen an increase in operating funds. Business growth has not occurred on Highway 58. It is time for our commissioners to earn their right to our votes by offering incentives to lure a Wal-Mart shopping center and other new businesses, including restaurants, into our community. There should be a police precinct on Highway 58 to help lower the crime rate. We watch other areas being offered such incentives and wonder why not the Highway 58 area. We must truly be the unwanted stepchild. We are tired of being ignored by the city and county.

Taking issue with editorials

The recent editorials by Clint Cooper read more like People magazine or the National Enquirer. Short paragraphs making fun of various Democrats isn't much of an editorial in my humble opinion. Poking fun at Sen. (Barbara) Boxer for not knowing 50 Cent. That's all Mr. Cooper can write about? You raised my subscription rate by 50 percent for this?
