The Write-in Candidate

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Fister, Thurman is on the school board. Why would that "scare libs" or anyone for that matter? Being the anti-establishment Republican you always claim to be, Rhonda's write-in campaign should bother you more than anyone. You know good and well that the only reason she is doing this is because Skillern lost in the primary. She is simply Skillern's puppet and she is upset because Fairbanks won. The voters in the district obviously wanted change, because they voted Skillern out and I think the majority of voters in the district will see through the Good Ole Boy type of politics. If she is the better candidate, she should have run in the primary.

If the voters in District 1 rejected Skillern and she is said to be a clone of Skillern what would make anyone think the voters would want her anymore than they did Skillern?

If Thurman wanted to run and she's her "own person" as Skillern said in an interview then she should have run against him in the primary and beat both candidates. But of course she didn't do that because Skillern is her "mentor" and he was expected to win. As the old saying goes, "Don't count your chickens till the eggs hatch."

The Tea Party's party is fading fast.. Having been taken over by Christian fundamentalist homophobes, they couldn't get the legal signatures to have a recall of Chris Anderson.

Now that recall drive is being investigated by the TBI for false signatures on those petitions. I hope those responsible go to jail.

Thurman bet on the loser. She lost. She can run as a write-in candidate but she'll lose that election too. She has every right to run and for that she deserves credit.

But being backed by the current Tea Party is not going to help her anymore than an endorsement from the KKK or Aryan Nation kooks.

It's common to denote a candidate's occupation. There's nothing wrong with that nor do I detect anything sinister in saying Rhonda's a hairdresser. I'd certainly trust my barber, shoe repairman, and welder more than I would a professional politician.

It's also free advertisement for Rhonda's business. Not everything is a conspiracy, regardless of what the Tea Party or Fox News says.

May 21, 2014 at 11:53 a.m.

ChattanoogaVol, exactly. I'll take a hairdresser, like her, over a fraud and a liar like BO any day. We need more hairdressers and less politicians.

I like Thurman because she believes in accountability. She's proven that on the school board.

Which is like being shown the cross to you libs.

"Christian fundamentalist homophobes" "KKK", "Arayan Nation" That's a good liberal, allah.

Fool. That's what you lefists call people who want accountability, freedom, respect for our Constitution, stronger borders, elimination of our police state, less government intrusion into our lives, and so on. The campaign by both parties, who have worked together, to smear Tea Party people, with the help of the media, has worked.

Doesn't it make you wonder why both parties want to wipe out the Tea Party? Doesn't that make you nervous? There's really only one party in this country, it's just the D.C. elites/corporate whores.

Look how it all just happens to come together with this illegal alien/ criminal thing. The Chamber of commerce, corporations like facebook, both parties, congressman openly calling for immigration laws to be ignored, proposals for illegal aliens to serve in the military, be lawyers, teachers, and so on.

Exchanging the two political parties for the current Tea Party?

As I've stated before, when the Tea Party went after fiscal issues it had a chance to succeed. When it turned into an extreme right-wing group of fundamentalist nutjobs seeking One Nation under Mike Huckabee, John Hagee, and people like Cliven Bundy, Christian homophobes, and racists it was no longer about economic policies but religious indoctrination.

The Tea Party is lost because of suicide and the religious whackos you allowed to take over. There's as much freedom in the Tea Party platform as in the KKK and John Birchers.

I'll take the devil I know over the Tea Party Christian Crusaders. When the Tea Party has the support of local religious bigots like June Griffin, Ken Orr, Blue-Bottle Fly Conservative, and you, I'll take my chances elsewhere.

I am coming out of retirement for one reason. To help the only honest politician I know, Rhonda Thurman.

Here are the problems you Rhonda haters have. These are facts:

Rhonda has won her school board races with more votes than Fred won as commissioner. She stomped everyone she went against.

Rhonda is as popular as it gets in the North End of the county. That North end is like a different planet compared to downtown. Conventional wisdom does not apply. You are about to find that out.

Rhonda is disliked by this newspaper, the power structure and the Republican establishment because she cannot be controlled. Fred was the same way. Fairbanks has already sold out. Get ready for a tax increase if he wins. The deal is already done.

Fred was beaten by 500 democrat votes that crossed-over. Fairbanks is either so dumb he doesn't get it or he was in on it. You think it was a coincidence that Fairbanks barely won and democrat Geno Shipley has already registered as a write-in candidate? Why don't you democrats complain about that? Isn't Geno Shipley a "shameless oppurtunist?" Oh...that's right, democrats can do anything they want.

A write-in campaign is completely legal, ethical, and difficult. If she is not a threat...then what are you all bitching about? Geno Shipley has every right to a write-in campaign and so does Rhonda Thurman. Let's see how well Fairbanks does without his democrat buddies. The bottom line is that Rhonda thinks she can represent District 1 better.

Lastly, Bennett is an idiot. He is only "funny" to you warped liberals. Any award he has received was from a bunch of other warped liberals. I hope he and Pam Sohn write an article about Rhonda every day. Please...

What is wrong with three choices in the August election?

When someone self confesses to being a sex offender as you did, I pay attention. So does everyone else.

Who, using good judgement, would confess to being a convicted sex offender as a joke?

One might joke about being a professional football player, a Nascar driver, or even a Tea Party politician, but to voluntarily confess to being a sex offender and listed on the sex offender registry?

Either way you deserve watching, and probably reporting to State officials for investigation.

Wow! Even your right-wing compatriots now must seriously doubt your character, judgement, and potential for suspect behavior.

Now I understand why you change your name so often in the forum.

I'm not your pal. I'm not pals with those who are or joke about being convicted sex offenders, child molesters, or rapists.

All one needs to do is see what you wrote about confessing to being a convicted sex offender.

Why did you confess? Why would any same person joke about that confession?

Maybe you felt guilty, were drunk, taking pain meds, or your Depends were too full and your Momma wasn't there to change you again — I don't know.

But no one, NO ONE, confesses to being a convicted sex offender without being guilty, serious mental issues, or hope to be stopped before you do it again. Social media is full of confessions that have resulted in investigations and arrests by the same actions you've made.

If you're not the known sex offender you claimed to be, by using someone else's identity you could be in serious legal trouble.

No one's a liar here except you. You confessed to being a known sex offender.

Now you can sit around and blame the President for this like some do for everything else, but the simple fact is that the man responsible for this is none other than the Honorable Eric Shinseki, who stepped down the last time this crap came to light, when GWB was President.

Obama did appoint the man when he assumed the Presidency, but his previously tarnished reputation had been smoothed over, which paved the way for his appointment.

Blaming the President and expecting him to be on top of all things, is just as silly as expecting you to know everything that goes on in Washington.

Every President hires a staff of people to head up various positions and this one is no different. But the man to blame is the man in charge of Veteran's Affairs, plain and simple.

And for sure, Congress had a duty to be on top of this as well, but they were too busy passing bogus bills to repeal ObamaCare and holding witch hunts that have went exactly nowhere.

You are right in that the person in charge is the one that should see that things are done right. I have said and repeat the president has not done a good job of selecting people for key positions. His criteria has been political instead of competence and managing skills. D.C. has a lot of paper work requirements but no real triangles of accuracy control or metrics validation.

I am not surprised that you defend the man although he has been a dismal failure at leadership as indicated by his selections for key positions and results. His top VA guy is a Vietnam veteran which does not give him managerial business experience and it shows. It is not unlike thinking being a POW qualifies McCain to be president which it does not. The waiting time for treatment and performance bonus plan without third party verification predictably drove people to provide incorrect data, in other words lie.

It is foolish to think the goverment can operate a health care facility with salaried doctors and support personnel more efficiently than private operations. Veterans in too many cases are not provided the support and care they deserve and that we the American people owe them.

Tom Coburn, Jim DeMint and Jeff Sessions effectively stopped veterans funding package making it dead in the water. What does that mean for veterans.

1- Dramatic cuts in medical care 2- Delayed or denied care 3- Longer waiting lines to see a doctor 4- Shortages in needed health care staff 5- Delays in nursing home programs 6- No improvements in State Veterans Nursing Homes 7- Cuts in vital VA Medical Research 8- More unacceptable claims and huge back logs 9- Denied care for returning troops with PTSD 10- Cuts in family care units

So who supports the troops and veterans hint not the Republicans.

Senate Republicans blocked the veterans bill by using a procedural maneuver to invoke the 60 vote rule. The final vote to waive the budget point of order failed, 56-41. Only two Republicans (Sen. Dean Heller and Sen. Jerry Moran) joined with Democrats on the vote.

Oh Bullsh!t.

Since WWII, the VA has always had pockets of failures scattered across the country at various times, and most of the time it will be local administrators who are the ones causing the problems.

To blame the President or even the man in charge in Washington is often misplaced. They cannot be in a position to know at all times what is going on at every single VA center. They too have people who report to them. When a lower level staff member is providing false information in such reports, such as was definitely the case in this latest VA failure, the person providing the false information is the one to blame.

"I'm not surprised that you defend the man although he has been a dismal failure at leadership as indicated by his selections for key positions and results."

Like you are in any position to determine that. You are Judge, Jury, and Executioner.

"His top VA guy is a Vietnam veteran which does not give him managerial business experience and it shows."

Clearly, you are not aware of the man's experience in the Department.

"The waiting time for treatment and performance bonus plan without third party verification predictably drove people to provide incorrect data, in other words lie."

And of course, that is all Obama's fault too.

"It is foolish to think the goverment can operate a health care facility with salaried doctors and support personnel more efficiently than private operations. Veterans in too many cases are not provided the support and care they deserve and that we the American people owe them."

But of course...the private sector has an impeccable history with no one ever having died due to improper care. Doctors who charge whatever they want never make mistakes.

If abortions were more readily available everywhere just as other health care is then the Kermit Gosnells would be easily policed by other medical doctors, hospitals, and medical associations. There will always be bad apples, but providing abortion services is not inherently bad anymore than obstetric services and the OB/Gyns who sometimes molest patients, or dentists who molest patients while the client is under sedation.

But big thanks for reminding me of an event tonight in Chattanooga.

There will be the film documentary "After Tiller" about the abortion rights of women and the threat to the doctors shown at Barking Legs Theater on Thursday, May 22, at 7:30 p.m. The capacity is 50 people so call the theater to make reservations. I'm sure some of the anti-choicers and fundamentalists will be there screaming, weeping, and wailing. I call them "Fred Phelps Lite". Here's hoping it makes the news.

I hope soon another women's clinic providing abortions comes to Chattanooga.

It will closer to all the Christian high schools, Bryan College, Temple, and Southern Baptists so they won't need to travel out-of-state or to back alley coat-hanger cranks.

It's amusing how fundies get their Depends in a wad over poor women who get abortions, but when it's their darling Christian unwed daughters who get pregnant, it becomes a necessary emergency D&C.

These emergency D&Cs are routinely performed at hospitals throughout Chattanooga for those with medical insurance and "Christian" doctors who otherwise pretend to be anti-choicers.

Abortions should be available to the women that choose them.

So do those at the VA, but mistakes are made by both private and public sector. Hell...one nearly killed my wife in 2006 and when I was most recently hospitalized, the Erlanger Staff Doctors damn near killed me by taking me off all my meds that were keeping me alive.

It's a long story, but the fact is that there is no evidence that private sector doctors are any better than those at the VA.

"There's no respect from envious dicks like you, and from BO/Dems/obamacare, for doctors and nurses."

Sir...#$%^ you and the self-righteous horse you rode in on.

You have not the first clue the level of respect I have for medical professionals. I owe a great many of them my life.

"They're just pawns to BO. doctors and nurses are the ones who give up huge hunks of their lives to study and take risks. What risks do you take?"

Oh shut the hell up. You're nothing short of an ignoramic idiot.

No one is even trashing medical professionals, yet here you are acting as if someone was.

My point was that there is no evidence whatsoever that VA professionals are any less professional than those of the private sector.

Mistakes and neglect occur in both.

"Kermit Gosnell, that baby butcher/torturer is the kind doctor that earns you libs' respect."

Ditto the above. You lie to make your points. Not one person has defended that man in this forum.

If Dems did as you claimed they did earlier and crossed over to vote against Skillern why would they not do the same thing to keep Thurman out? There is nothing to prevent them from voting against her rather than vote for one of their own(who is sure to lose in that part of the county anyway)? So what happens if she loses as Skillern did? Does she accept it or does she and her supporters mount a recall if Fairbanks is elected?

"ChattanoogaVol said... Why does the CTFP contstantly remind everyone, in every single story it seems, that Rhonda Thurman is a hairdresser? I think I know."

There's nothing wrong with her chosen profession. In fact, it certainly has paid her well enough to put her children in a private school while she sits on the public school board of education.

Rhonda will probably go door-to-door in the district to tell residents how bad Fairbanks will be. And if you don't promise to support her, she'll start parking in the street in front of your home and harassing you.

I lost respect for Rhonda when she simply chose not to vote instead of voting against the pension for school board members. I'm sure our local Tea Party leaders will let her slide on that issue.

ibshame....Democrats did cross over and now Geno Shipley is probably out. If the democrats turn out for Fairbanks this time, it will only be because they want him to win due to the fact that they think they can beat him in four years.

Rhonda's numbers were always higher than Fred's because she had democrat support also. You could honestly say, that if Fred had run as a write-in, it might be sour grapes but Rhonda did not run in the primary. Why do you guys keep implying there is something wrong with a write-in?

Geez, Fairbanks won by 50 votes. It wasn't an overwhelming mandate. If district 1 wants him, then they can vote him in.

You guys just hate Rhonda because she doesn't put up with crap. She says what she means and does what she says. Most of this comes from school system worshipers. The reason you like Fairbanks is he promised the moon to everyone who would listen and will probably vote for a tax increase. No chance of that with Fred or Rhonda.

TheJack ~ do you see any democrats on this list of senators who voted against the veterans in February of this year? Yes, it's nothing but ideological hatred and to try to spin it otherwise is so typically right-wing punditry. Here are the 40 Republicans who voted to keep America’s veterans unemployed,

Alexander (R-TN) Ayotte (R-NH) Barrasso (R-WY) Blunt (R-MO) Boozman (R-AR) Burr (R-NC) Chambliss (R-GA) Coats (R-IN) Coburn (R-OK) Cochran (R-MS) Corker (R-TN) Cornyn (R-TX) Crapo (R-ID) DeMint (R-SC) Enzi (R-WY) Graham (R-SC) Grassley (R-IA) Hatch (R-UT) Hoeven (R-ND) Hutchison (R-TX) Isakson (R-GA) Johanns (R-NE) Johnson (R-WI) Kyl (R-AZ) Lee (R-UT) Lugar (R-IN) McCain (R-AZ) McConnell (R-KY) Moran (R-KS) Paul (R-KY) Portman (R-OH) Risch (R-ID) Roberts (R-KS) Rubio (R-FL) Sessions (R-AL) Shelby (R-AL) Thune (R-SD) Toomey (R-PA) Vitter (R-LA) Wicker (R-MS)

Mark Kirk and James Inhofe did not vote.

If any two of the Republicans on this list would have decided to put our veterans first, this bill would have moved forward. Instead, Senate Republicans thanked veterans by denying them jobs.

More Tea Party --Fundamentalist Idiots Shenanigans

"MADISON, Miss. (AP) — Authorities in Mississippi say they have arrested two more suspects, including a tea party official, in the investigation of photos taken of the ailing wife of U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran.

Madison County District Attorney Michael Guest says Mark Mayfield, a member of the board of the Central Mississippi Tea Party, and Richard Sager of Laurel were arrested Thursday.

A conservative Mississippi blogger was arrested last week on allegations that he took the photos of Rose Cochran without her permission at the nursing home where she's lived for 13 years.

Kelly is charged with exploitation, filming without permission and conspiracy.

Sager is charged with evidence tampering and conspiracy.

Mayfield is charged with conspiracy."

If there was an official Tea Party, they would garner at best, a 30% vote in any election.

Those who call themselves Tea Party members are guilty of attempting to hijack the Republican Party, by disguising their true intent(s).

Now that Most of America has discovered their evil little plot, they are voting against those who even suggest they are Tea Party members.

Centrist Republicans are going to be the only Republican winners this fall.

He promised computers for schools, fire halls, rails for trails, etc, etc, That costs money raised from increased taxes. Money doesn't fall out of the sky.
