A Chattanooga man accused of beating a 3-year-old to death will next appear in court on Oct. 1.

Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge Christie Mahn Sell set Rhasean Lowry's court date on Tuesday morning. Chattanooga police say Lowry was supposed to be caring for 3-year-old Tatiana Emerson when the girl died.

According to an incident report, Lowry told the police that the girl slipped and fell down the stairs at the Econo Lodge on Bonny Oaks Drive. Lowry said that Tatiana passed out as he drove her on Aug. 26 to the hospital, where she died the next day.

Police say the evidence contradicts Lowry's statement. Security footage does not show Tatiana falling down the stairs at the Econo Lodge. It shows Lowry carrying Tatiana's limp body down the stairs to his car, according to an incident report.

Also, child abuse experts told the police that Tatiana's head injuries appeared to be the result of blunt force trauma, of somebody repeatedly hitting her in the head. According to an incident report, Tatiana's 5-year-old brother later told the police that Lowry often beats him.
