Bradley County Sheriff Steve Lawson was released from the hospital after being treated for injuries received in a multicar crash on Interstate 75 in Chattanooga.

Lawson intends to continue working as he recovers at home, according to a statement from spokesperson Sgt. Robert Jones.

Lawson stopped by the Sheriff's Office on Wednesday for a brief visit to reassure employees and Bradley County residents he's "committed to his duties," the agency said.

"Sheriff Lawson will be dividing his time between working in the office and remotely between doctor visits while he recovers from his injuries, ensuring that daily operations continue smoothly," the statement said.

The crash happened Sunday near the Shallowford Road exit after Lawson left a church service, according to authorities. The sheriff was driving his personal vehicle.

Lawson was transported from the scene to a Chattanooga hospital for treatment and was admitted for observation, authorities said.

According to Chattanooga police spokesperson Sgt. Victor Miller, a multivehicle accident happened just before 1 p.m. Sunday on the southbound lanes of I-75. Chattanooga Fire and Hamilton County EMS responded, and an ambulance transported three people to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation indicates three vehicles were stopped or slowed for heavy traffic, according to Miller. A fourth vehicle failed to stop and rear-ended one of the vehicles. The impact from the vehicle that failed to stop caused the other vehicles to move forward, striking the vehicles in front of them. Three vehicles were towed from the scene.

There was no information about which vehicle carried Lawson. A report on the crash has not yet been released.
