1 dead, several injured as car hits pedestrians in California

REDONDO BEACH, Calif. — Police say one person is dead and several are injured after a woman drove into a group of pedestrians outside a Southern California church where a Christmas performance had just ended.

Redondo Beach police Lt. Joe Hoffman says some of the injured are in critical condition after the Wednesday night crash. Hoffman says one adult died at a hospital, and the injured included at least one child.

Police say early reports show up to a dozen people hurt, but the exact number still isn't clear.

Hoffman says the woman was driving on Pacific Coast Highway when she ran a red light, hit the pedestrians, and then another vehicle.

Police took the woman into custody and to a hospital. They're investigating whether she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
