TBI officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday in Rutherford County.

Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Susan Niland said in a statement issued this morning that 55-year-old Jeffrey Underhill is being treated for his injuries at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville. There was no immediate word on the severity of his injuries.

Around 3 p.m. Wednesday, a Rutherford County deputy went to 427 Double Springs Road, southeast of Murfressboro, Tenn., in response to a call there earlier this week, Niland said in the release.

"At some point, a physical altercation occurred in the driveway between the individual and the deputy. During the altercation, the deputy fired his weapon, striking the man," Niland said.

"The deputy sustained minor injuries from the scuffle," she said.

TBI is withholding the name of the officer involved in the shooting and leaving the decision to identify him to the Rutherford County Sheriff's Department.

Niland said the investigation remains active and ongoing. The case file will be turned over to the District Attorney General Jennings Jones' Office for review when the investigation is complete, she said.
