Hamilton County Commissioner Warren Mackey has been appointed as a member of the National Association of Counties' (NACo) Board of Directors, according to a news release.

NACo President Roy Charles Brooks, a Tarrant County, Texas commissioner, named Mackey as an at-large member for a one year term, effective on the final day of NACo's Annual Conference in Franklin County, Ohio, on Monday, July 24.

"I am extremely proud and made humble by this appointment to serve on this Board that represents 3,069 counties throughout this nation," Mackey said in the release. "As a result of some changes that I made while president of the statewide Tennessee County Commission Association, the TCCA put my name forward to serve on the National Association of Counties Board of Directors."

Mackey, now one of the leaders of the organization, will join the Board of Directors in helping govern NACo between conferences and preside over the administration and strategic direction of the association, according to David Jackson, NACo's Communication Director.

Mackey said he wants to use his new position to focus on three primary issues, such as obtaining more funding for public schools from the federal and state governments, protecting money states receive for the Pilot program and pushing governments to improve the health of Tennesseans and other U.S. citizens.

Mackey joins one other member from Tennessee, Mark Luttrell, the mayor of Shelby County.

Since its founding in 1935, NACo has brought county officials together to engage in discussion and advocacy on national policy, county solutions, and more.

NACo is currently in a pivotal position as both federal and state governments are pushing more responsibilities down to the local governments largely without adequate resources, according to the release.
