Police arrest Alabama woman, say drugs smoked near her baby

GADSDEN, Ala. - An Alabama woman has been arrested after police say they discovered marijuana and other drugs were being smoked in the same room where her baby was being kept in a playpen.

Al.com reports police announced Monday that 29-year-old Sherry Terrell Burns of Gadsden was charged with trafficking in synthetic drugs and chemical endangerment of a child. Authorities say child welfare workers took custody of her baby, which was less than 1 year old.

Phil Sims, deputy commander of the Etowah County drug enforcement unit, said police went to the woman's apartment Saturday on a tip and found an overwhelming smell of marijuana as well as 70 grams of the synthetic drug salvia.

Sims said the drugs had been smoked in a living room where officers found the baby.
