A Robbinsville, N.C., man is charged with stabbing an Andrews man and leaving him on the porch of a home "near lifeless," authorities said.

Jackie Slaughter, 54, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury in an alleged assault on 30-year-old Cody White who was found bleeding on the porch of a home on West Memorial Drive in Andrews, Palmer said.

Cherokee County EMS personnel and Valley Town Rescue members rendered aid at the scene and White was airlifted to Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga where his is still being treated, Palmer said.

Cherokee County Sheriff's Office investigators and North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation agents continued the investigation which included a search of the residence where the assault took place. Palmer said several items of evidence were collected and witnesses were interviewed en route to Slaughter's arrest.

Slaughter is being held on a $50,000 secure bond at the Cherokee County Detention Center. He faces a May 23 date in District Court.

"We are still investigating this crime and so far have no indication as to what provoked Slaughter to commit the assault on Mr. White," Palmer said. "As we know Jackie Slaughter is no stranger to the judicial system in Western North Carolina. We are grateful for excellent teamwork by everyone concerned. Because we are a small community, being able to call upon outside assets and join them with local is a real blessing."
