A man was shot by sheriff's deputies in Whitfield County early Friday morning after he allegedly refused to drop a weapon he used to threaten authorities.

Whitfield County deputies responded to the 100 block of South Adela Drive at 1:53 a.m. on a report of a man who was acting "paranoid," according to a news release.

The caller was a woman who said her husband was bipolar, off his medication and acting strange. She also said he had a machete and a hammer.

When deputies arrived, the man walked out the front door of the home while waving an object aggressively at them. The deputies gave several verbal commands to the man to drop the object, but he refused, and one of the deputies shot him once in the shoulder.

The man continued to be combative while paramedics worked to administer aid and transport him, but he was eventually taken to Hamilton Medical Center with what appeared to be a minor wound.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is handling an investigation of the shooting.
