A good Samaritan was shot five times trying to stop a gas station robbery early Wednesday in southwest Atlanta.

The man was at a Texaco gas station in the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive about 1:30 a.m. when he saw a white sedan pull up, Atlanta police told Channel 2 Action News.

Three armed men jumped out of the car and tried to rob someone in the parking lot, police said.

The man tried to help the robbery victim, retrieved his own gun and ended up in a shootout with the robbers, according to the news station. More than 20 shots were fired.

The robbers eventually took off in the white car, and the robbery victim left the scene as well.

Officers are searching for them. It is unclear if they were injured during the shootout, Channel 2 reported.

The good Samaritan was rushed to a local hospital.

His wife, who picked up his car from the gas station, told Channel 2 her husband is expected to be OK.

"That man was actually being a good citizen trying to help the other citizen that was being robbed," Atlanta police Capt. Brian Schiffbauer said.
