Counting on cooling treats to heat up business

* Name: Bill Henderson

* Position: Owner and shaved ice maker

* Location: Tropical Sno Hawaiian Shaved Ice in Coolidge Park

* First job: Working at his uncle's service station when he was 16

* Favorite part: Henderson, who generally parks his truck near Coolidge Park, said his favorite part of the job is watching the families who come to the park to enjoy the summer and freedom of the outdoors. He said he loves to watch the young children playing.

* Least favorite part: "When it gets too hot." To help alleviate the muggy and sometimes brutal Tennessee humidity, Henderson relies on a small fan and, of course, shaved ice, of which he said he usually has one every day. His favorite flavor, he said, is classic cherry. "It's like a '57 Chevy."

* Best advice: "You just have to work hard. The harder you work, the more money you'll make." The advantage of a summer business such as owning a shaved ice truck is that Henderson has the opportunity to enjoy having more time to spend with his son in the winter.

* How to make a career of it: In order to have a shaved ice truck, a person must acquire a proper license and undergo health department inspection. "You have to go through a little bit of red tape to do it," he said. "Then you get hooked up with some flavors and get all your supplies together." He did not, however, give up the secret to creating that perfect ice-to-flavoring ratio.
