Petco store coming to Dalton, Ga., development

photo Ordner Construction of Duluth, Ga., is the general contractor for a 13,000-square-foot Petco on Shugart Road in Dalton, Ga. Bill Mitchell Contracting is preparing the site.

• Name: The Westmoreland Commons

• Location: Shugart Road off Interstate 75 in Dalton, Ga.

• Status: Phase one of construction finished in September with the opening of Kohl's. Construction is under way on the second half of the project with a 13,000-square-foot Petco and up to 20,000 square feet of adjoining storefronts.

• Economic effect: If development company RealtyLink is able to make a deal with the retailers it thinks fit in the development, construction will hit $40 million and the shopping center will create 150 to 300 jobs. Beyond that, the development will mean an influx of property and sales taxes for the city.

• Future development: Other than Petco and Kohl's, no retailers have committed to the development. But Brian Anderson, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce, said commitments aren't far off. "These guys, they typically run in packs," he said. Anderson and RealtyLink expect to announce more retailers in the area by the end of February and expect the project to finish by the end of the year.

• Features: The retail and restaurant development features more than 270 parking spaces. The plans show space for 13 businesses, including the Kohl's and Petco.

• Amenities: The shopping center sits near the area's Super Walmart and Home Depot. More than 31,000 people with an average income of $63,000 live within three miles of the center. Nearly 103,000 people averaging $58,048 a year live less than 10 miles away.

• Developers: Greenville, S.C., based development company RealtyLink is marketing the development.
