FedEx Corp. Chief Executive Frederick Smith today announced a $100,000 donation to the fund to help the families of the five service members who died in Chattanooga last month.

"Being a former Marine, it just breaks my heart," said Smith, who was the keynote speaker at the Chattanooga Area Chamber of Commerce's annual meeting. "I hope it will do good for the families in the future."

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning and U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., created the Chattanooga Heroes Fund to help the families of the four Marines and a Navy sailor who were killed on July 16 after 24-year-old Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire at a military reserve center.

Corker, who introduced the founder of Memphis-based FedEx, cited the gift unveiled by the businessman, calling him "a great leader."
